Total Energy Singular Vectors for Atmospheric Chemical Transport Models

چکیده
The aim of this paper is to address computational aspects of the total energy singular vector analysis of atmospheric chemical transport models. We discuss the symmetry of the tangent-linear/adjoint operator for stiff systems. Results for a 3D simulation with real data reveal that the total energy singular vectors depend on the target domain, simulation window, chemical reactions, and meteorological data.

Ensemble-Based Data Assimilation for Atmospheric Chemical Transport Models
The task of providing an optimal analysis of the state of the atmosphere requires the development of dynamic data-driven systems (das) that efficiently integrate the observational data and the models. In this paper we discuss fundamental aspects of nonlinear ensemble data assimilation applied to atmospheric chemical transport models. We formulate autoregressive models for the background errors ...
متن کاملSingular Vector Analysis for Atmospheric Chemical Transport Models
The singular vectors of a chemical transport model are the directions of maximum perturbation growth over a finite time interval. They have proved useful for the estimation of error growth, the initialization of ensemble forecasts, and the optimal placement of adaptive observations. The aim of this paper is to address computational aspects of singular vector analysis for atmospheric chemical tr...
متن کاملTargeted Observations for Atmospheric Chemistry and Transport Models
The aim of this paper is to address computational aspects of the targeted observations problem for atmospheric chemical transport models. The fundamental question being asked is where to place the observations such that, after data assimilation, the uncertainty in the resulting state is minimized. Our approach is based on reducing the system along the subspace defined by the dominant singular v...
متن کاملUsing Neutral Singular Vectors to Study Low-Frequency Atmospheric Variability
The authors explore the use of the ‘‘neutral vectors’’ of a linearized version of a global quasigeostrophic atmospheric model with realistic mean flow in the study of the nonlinear model’s low-frequency variability. Neutral vectors are the (right) singular vectors of the linearized model’s tendency matrix that have the smallest eigenvalues; they are also the patterns that exhibit the largest re...
متن کاملThe predictability of large-scale wind-driven flows
The singular values associated with optimally growing perturbations to stationary and time-dependent solutions for the general circulation in an ocean basin provide a measure of the rate at which solutions with nearby initial conditions begin to diverge, and hence, a measure of the predictability of the flow. In this paper, the singular vectors and singular values of stationary and evolving exa...
